Breweries are often located within vast structures like repurposed warehouses, but MadTree’s third Greater Cincinnati location is an adaptive reuse of a different type of cavernous space – an aircraft hangar.
The taproom + restaurant has a full kitchen, private event space, and kids play areas. Indoor meets outdoor with garage doors that open to the patio, a living wall + a life-size tree in the taproom. The team added an entry and designed for a new roof, exterior cladding + rooftop units. The project was designed with inclusivity + sustainability in mind – besides design choices, 1% of MadTree sales are donated to local, environmental non-profits + investment in carbon offsets.
Before design began, Schaefer completed a feasibility assessment for the 1980s airplane hangar, comparing the existing condition against MadTree’s loading requirements + the current Ohio Building Code. A number of these requirements drove programming decisions to help reduce costs.
The project renovated the hangar’s existing pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) structure + the adjacent office building. The new addition is also PEMB. Interior work included structural steel-framed structures or supports for the new layout.
MadTree Parks + Rec is located within Blue Ash’s Summit Park. Schaefer designed other projects within the park including the observation tower and various community + retail structures.
