The Seger Family Natatorium is a state-of-the-art aquatic facility that’s designed to serve the needs of students in the Sycamore community. It’s home to all aquatic sports at Sycamore High School, including swimming, diving and water polo, and it can hold up to 361 occupants in the spectator seating area. The pool has eight lanes with a minimum depth of seven feet and 12 feet in the deep end.
Schaefer worked through options at the beginning of the project to create the best option to fit the new natatorium in place of the existing. Discussing options of excavating down for the pool without impacting the existing building foundations and parking lot, Schaefer chose to do a permanent earth retention structure at the lower level.
Challenges on this project included working on a limited site with an adjacent structure that was still operational and had to stay in place. Schaefer worked to minimize the impact to the existing building so it wouldn’t have to be reinforced or require any major modifications.
