Xavier University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Cincinnati, Ohio

Xavier University’s new College of Osteopathic Medicine is designed with the next generation of medical professionals in mind.

The new medical school will house a nearly 200-seat lecture hall, a 5800 sq ft meeting hall, and a teaching kitchen that will provide a unique instructional environment on preparing nutritious meals. It will also contain a simulation suite with 16 patient rooms, which will provide a mock-outpatient settings for the practice of clinical skills, and five flexible simulation rooms for a myriad of learning scenarios including inpatient + acute care.

On the exterior, the building’s aesthetics were designed to complement the university’s existing buildings. On the interior, additional design attention went to hanging interior partitions + medical equipment, as well as to a monumental stair.

The building was constructed with mild reinforced concrete throughout. The floor framing consists of beam and one-way slabs. The lateral system is composed of shear walls in a partial below-grade portion and concrete moment frames throughout. The foundation system consists of drilled piers extended to bedrock, and the partial below grade portion required innovative horizontally spanning basement walls between external counterforts.
