The new 92,000 sq ft Miami University McVey Data Science Building is the new home for the departments of Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Emerging Technology in Business + Design, the Armstrong Institute, and the Center for Analytics + Data Sciences. The facility has traditional spaces – research + classrooms, places to gather, offices, and computer labs – and more innovative spaces – cyber security lab, robotics/maker lab, extended reality stage, user experience focus group room, and virtual reality track space.
The three-story structure complements the existing campus aesthetic on the outside, and provides an industry, not academic, experience on the inside. The highly-connected students + faculty immersed in mathematics, data science, digital arts, statistics + analytics fields made visual displays + connectivity of great importance to the design + program layout of the new space.
The structure was constructed with structural steel + reinforced concrete. Special design considerations included structural support of exterior masonry + cast stone cladding, and floor vibrations in spaces with lighter live loads. The team overcame challenges expected with an accelerated design schedule + a tight project budget.
