REI needed a new distribution center + office facility to better serve + reduce shipping times for shoppers in the eastern, midwestern + southern regions. The space is not only located on 41 acres amidst the Great Smoky Mountains, but form liners + paint were used to mimic the mountainous terrain on its exterior walls.

The new tilt-up concrete facility was constructed as slab on grade to accommodate multiple racking systems. It consists of single-story warehouse and office space. A second level mezzanine was constructed with composite steel framing and required coordination of loads.

This distribution center was designed for the future – in more ways than one. It was designed to be a zero-waste facility once completed, using 100% renewable + electric energy. It was also designed for future expansion; the team planned for future punched openings in the current perimeter walls to accommodate an addition.
