John Glenn Columbus International Airport Consolidated Rental Car Facility (ConRAC)
Columbus, Ohio

Schaefer provided structural design services for John Glenn Columbus International Airport Consolidated Rental Car Facility (ConRAC), specifically the customer service building (CSB) and the ready-return garage (RAC).

The CSB acts as the transaction point for customers, where they meet guest services and complete their paperwork. It will be a one story steel frame building with braced frames and moment frames as the lateral system.

The RAC garage is where a customer picks up and returns a car, as well as the main storage facility for the vehicles. Based on feedback received from the rental car companies, Schaefer is designing the RAC with tall,16 ft floor heights and large, open 60 ft x 54 ft bays.

For the foundation system, Schaefer played a critical role in evaluating augercast pile, drilled pier and shallow foundation systems, working directly with ground improvement contractors and the geotechnical engineer. Due to the significant cost savings, both structures will utilize shallow foundations supported on an intermediate ground improvement system.
