Schaefer Project Leader | Principal Kyle Kusmer is presenting Pipe Grids: A deeper look into the design + installation of a pipe grid at USITT26 on March 21, 2026 in Long Beach, California. Kyle is co-presenting the session with Eric McAfee of Stagecraft Industries.
About the session | Pipe Grids: A deeper look into the design + installation of a pipe grid
Pipe grids have often been an overlooked aspect of theater building design. In this session, we will examine key considerations for the design and installation of pipe grids. Topics will include overall load capacity versus specific loading requirements, applicable codes and standards, the impact of seismic bracing on design, structural considerations for supporting the loads imposed by pipe grids, and the selection of appropriate hardware for installation and vertical supports. The discussion will also cover seismic loads and their localized effects on the grid, as well as their broader impact on the entire system and building structure.
