Reeves Whitney joins Schaefer as a structural engineer. Read below to learn more about Reeves!
1. Favorite thing to do off the clock?
I like to explore + enjoy the outdoors including the greenway trails + parks in my area.
2. Favorite sports and teams?
My favorite professional sport to follow is hockey. I’m a life-long Rangers fan, but the Hurricanes are becoming my #2 team.
3. Meet my family.
My wife Michelle and I have been married for almost 17 years and we have two daughters, Claire (13) + Alexandra (10). Last year the kids finally broke us down and we added a puppy to the mix, so Maddie the Goldendoodle is the newest addition. We also have a hamster named Hedwig.
4. What are your hobbies?
I listen to music and watch live performances of my favorite artists. Recently, I’ve been trying to learn about astrophysics + quantum mechanics – it’s truly mind-blowing stuff!
5. What’s your signature dish to cook for family and friends?
Anything on the grill! I love to try new recipes and experiment with non-traditional grill ingredients.
6. If you weren’t in structural engineering, what would you be?
I would be a pilot. I’ve always had a fascination with flying since I was little and that’s probably where I would have ended up.
7. Why you chose to work/live in North Carolina?
We love where we live in North Carolina! The proximity to both the mountains + the beach are a major factor. Our county has excellent public schools for our kids, and we have family + friends close by!
8. What would you sing at karaoke?
“More Than This” by Roxy Music (Lost in Translation homage); but seriously, no one should ever hear me sing.
9. What industry book have you read that has been most helpful to your career?
Early on I read Structures: Or Why Things Don’t Fall Down. Although I had already learned all the concepts formally, I was impressed by the way it was explained in lay terms for anyone to understand. As engineers we are often tasked with trying to explain complex scientific + mathematical concepts in a relatable way.
10. If you could design a structure anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Somewhere in the US Virgin Islands, provided there were a lot of site visits required!
