Staff Spotlight: Kyle Kusmer, PE

Kyle Kusmer celebrates 20 years at Schaefer! Read below to learn more about Kyle.

1. Favorite thing to do off the clock?

Something outside, whether it’s sports or a home improvement project. Any home improvement project is good, as most engineers want to be contractors.

2. Most prized possession/what you couldn’t live without (outside of family and friends)?

It would be my iPad. It’s just so easy to use and it has everything I need to pass the time: movies, books, apps… and I have a Candy Crush problem.

3. Meet my family.

My wife Kristin and I have been married for 20 years now. I have my son, Jackson, who will be a senior in high school and my daughter, Caitlin, will be a freshman. We also have a dog, Rudy the Bernedoodle.

4. What is the most extreme thing you have ever done?

I try to limit extreme in my life, but Schaefer put a team together for Dangerwheel about six years ago, which involves riding an adult tricycle down a large hill with ramps. I did this once.

5. What’s your signature dish to cook for family and friends?

Anything on the smoker for sure. It would be a brisket if I have a full day around the house with nothing to do.

6. If you weren’t in structural engineering, what would you be?

I would probably be a football coach or teaching somewhere. Both my kids are throwers (discus + shotput) in track, and I’ve had to learn + teach discus in the past couple years. I enjoy meeting new people + learning something new.

7. What’s on your bucket list?

I think a European vacation would be great. I’ve seen a lot of the U.S. and Caribbean, but I have yet to make it to Europe.

8. Fun fact about yourself.

My dad had an engineering + surveying company. When I was in high school, I spent my summers at Cedar Point surveying + laying out roller coaster foundations.

9. What is a skill that you don’t have, but wish you did?

I wish I could play the guitar. I have picked up a guitar and tried throughout the years, but it hasn’t stuck yet.

10. What about Schaefer gets you to jump out of bed in the morning

The opportunity to solve a problem. I enjoy puzzles + solving things, and in the entertainment world there is not much repetitive work, so every day there’s something new to solve.
