Staff Spotlight: Chris Hahnel

Welcome to our newest Cincinnati structural engineer, Chris.

1. Why you chose Schaefer.

I choose Schaefer because of its broad project portfolio. With the opportunity to design so many different kinds of structures, I will diversify my experience and continually be challenged.

2. Why you chose to be a structural engineer.

I have always been fascinated with the creativity and design that goes into buildings and wanted to be a part of it.

3. Favorite thing to do off the clock.

I enjoy being outside as much as possible. Outdoor activities are always more fun with a group of great friends.

4. What are your hobbies?

You can often find me hiking and camping, woodworking, and brewing beer.

5. What would you do with $1 million?

I would move into a cabin on a large plot of land, donate to my favorite causes and travel the world.

6. If you could design a structure anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I’d most like to design a structure in Denver, Colorado; I’d love to add my contributions among the mountains. With Schaefer’s national reach, I might just get to do it sooner than I think.

7. Meet my family.

I have a strong support system in my parents, Amy and Bill. I have two sisters; Jessica is my twin, and Katherine is the youngest.

8. If I wasn’t a structural engineer I would be…

An architect or a math teacher.

9. Where did you go to school?

I earned a Bachelor of Science, Civil/Structural Engineering from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Science, Civil/Structural Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.

10. Why you chose to work/live in Cincinnati.

Cincinnati is close to home my hometown of Independence, Kentucky, and close to my family and friends. Also, there is so much to do in and around the city.  If you can’t find something fun you’re just not looking hard enough.
